Manvel Motorsports is the online outlet for me, Carey Akin.  I have been around dirt track racing since 1973, when I attended my first race at Hangtown Speedway at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds in Placerville, California.  I have been hooked ever since.  By 1975 I was working in the booth at Hangtown, assisting the announcer.  In 1976, I started co-announcing and became the full time announcer at the beginning of the 1977 season.  About halfway through that season, I left, not only Hangtown Speedway, but northern California, to head off to college and a career as a merchant seaman.

In some of my visits back to California, I started stooging for the Super Stock of Larry Pfost at what was Hangtown, but being operated under its current name as Placerville Speedway, during the 1982 season.  After that, my life got busy and I moved quite a bit and didn't spend much time around racing until the late 80's in the Houston, Texas area.

Between raising a family and having a very time  consuming job, I wasn't able to be too directly involved in racing, other than attending as a fan a few times a year.  I will always be a fan, and is the driving force behind what I do at the track.  By the mid 90's, though, my obligations freed up some and I began crewing on the winged sprint car owned and driven by Scott Jordan of Vidor, Texas.  I stayed crewing for Scott when  he switched to a modified.  In 2002, Scott sold off the modified operation, and I began crewing on the Late Model Stock car owned by Donald Flynn and driven by Dave McMillan at first, and later then by Donald.  When that car was sold, I then started crewing on the Late Model Stock owned by Stacy Hoover, and, at the time, driven by Shane Alexander.  Shane stepped out of the car, and Joe Mayhew got behind the wheel.

The class was dropped by local Houston tracks, and Stacy started up the Southern Late Model Stock series, and I was elected president.  We had our season in 2007, and it was quite a ride.  Our team ended up with the championship, but the car was sold at the end of the season, and we moved to a modified.  At the same time, I started to get more serious about my photography, something that I have always been interested in and dabbled with from time to time.  The team, now known as MHM racing is making a name here in the Houston area, and we have pictures on another page of this site.

In between all the Houston racing, I got to know a few folks up in Indiana, and some that just happen to travel there for the racing.  Next thing I know, I am traveling up there once or twice a year to enjoy some of the best open wheel racing in the country.  Much of it reminded me of what got me hooked in the first place all those years before out in California.

During the 2008 season, Stacy put "Manvel Motorsports" in plain vinyl letters on the car, to represent my support for the team, in both mud scraping and buying the odd part or two.  Before the year was out, and with the help of Sean Buckley (of jackslash.com), I had a logo so I decided to go ahead and start the website.

As the 2010 season gets into full swing, I would like to add that my pictures have been getting some more attention.  Some can be seen in Flat Out! magazine and National Speed Sport News; aslo locally in the Baytown Sun.  I now also write a weekly column in the Baytown Sun about our local racing scene.  One  of my pictures has also been picked up as part of a national racing oil advertising campaign and can be seen in numerous publications such as Circle Track and Speedway Illustrated.  Just look for the Valvoline ad with the dirt modifieds in it.  Also look for our pictures on websites such as Jackslash.com, Unites States Auto Club (USAC), on driver's sites including Jason Johnson, Tim Kaeding, Jesse Hockett, Dustin Morgan and many others.

Manvel Motorsports covers all of the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) events in the Houston area.  We have also been named as the official photographer for the new Texas State Late Model racing series.  Look for us at all their upcoming events.

Enjoy my site and my pictures.  Please feel free to buy any.  If you have any questions, or just want to say "hi", drop an email.  I will get back to you.
